Caledonia CAMERON, John Vermont Historical Magazine, No XI, October 1867, pp 381-382 John CAMERON, a native of Scotland, came to America and settled in Ryegate [Caledonia County, Vermont] in 1790. He purchased 1,000 acres of land in the western part of the town, and afterwards the Corner [Ryegate Corner], one and a half acres of John ORR, on which he built the first store in town. The land is now owned by his son, John CAMERON, whose dwelling house occupies the place of the store. He [the subject] represented the town more than twelve years, was several years member of the council, a judge in 1814, and although a Democrat, he was retained in office under the Federalists. Judge CAMERON was a man of large mental endowments, whose influence was not only felt in the community where he resided, but throughout the state. He [John CAMERON, the subject] died in 1837, aged seventy-six years. His first wife was a daughter of Gen. STARK.
