Caledonia BELDEN, Benjamin Vermont Historical Magazine, No XI, October 1867, p 307 Benjamin BURKE was born in 1756 in Connecticut. He first came to this town [Burke, Caledonia County, Vermont] in 1792, as an agent for distant land proprietors. He paid the town a visit every year on business for his employers, until 1805, when he became a permanent settler. He was first married about 1780, to Miss Rhoda PHELPS, who died in 1783 [as Rhoda BURKE]. In 1790 he was again married, to Miss Sally WOODRUFF, who died in 1831. He [Benjamin BURKE] died 09 July 1820. [Note that Benjamin died eleven years before his second wife. When Benjamin's second wife died, was she at that time Mrs. Sally BURKE, or had she remarried? Bracketed material added by submitter, who is not researching these surnames, to support or clarify information given in the biography and to raise questions.] Submitted by Cathy Kubly
