Burlington: Ullery Publishing Company, 1912, p 110 Stephen Goodyear BARNES, educator and clergyman, St. Johnsbury [Caledonia County, Vermont], was born 02 April 1853 in Perth Amboy [Middlesex County], New Jersey, son of Joshua Edward and Elizabeth (WOODBRIDGE) BARNES. Educated at Lafayette College, A. B. 1873; Ph. D. for studies in English philology 1878; Litt. D. for studies in literature 1891, both of these courses being pursued under the direction of Prof. F. A. MARCH; studied theology at Andover Seminary 1878-1879, and at Hartford Seminary 1891-1892, graduating from the latter seminary; honorary degree D. D. from Iowa College 1896. In 1881 he [Stephen Goodyear BARNES] married Hannah W. MAGOUN of Grinnell [Poweshiek County], Iowa, daughter of President George F. MAGOUN of Iowa College. Mr. BARNES was Professor of English literature Iowa College 1873-1891; ordained Congregational minister 1881; pastor in Longmeadow [Hampden County], Massachusetts, 1891-1900; college pastor and dean of the theological department of Fisk University, Nashville [Davidson County], Tennessee, 1900-1902; instructor in Christian ethics, Hartford Seminary, 1892; lecturer on theology in the same seminary 1902; has given courses of lectures on biblical themes in conferences held at Knowlton, Dundee, and Montreal, Province of Quebec, and at Fairfax and Barton; pastor of the South Congregational Church in St. Johnsbury [Caledonia County, Vermont] since 1902. Author of "Voices of Faith and Love" (poems) 1908; also of essays and addresses on literary and religious subjects in various periodicals. Editor of French-American Citizen 1894-1895; vice president French-American College, Springfield [Hampden County], Massachusetts, 1897-1901; trustee of St. Johnsbury Academy since 1908.
