ARNOLD was born in St. Johnsbury [Caledonia County, Vermont] 29 January 1792 [son of Jonathan ARNOLD], and removed to Rhode Island at an early age. He graduated at Dartmouth College [Hanover, Grafton County, New Hampshire] in 1811, was educated for the bar [admitted to the bar in 1814, practiced law in Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island], but turned his attention to [manufacturing and] mercantile pursuits [in 1821. He was a member of the house of representatives of Rhode Island from 1826-1831.] In 1831 he was elected Governor of Rhode Island, and re-elected in 1832 [served as Governor 1831-1833]; he was a member of the Governor's council during the Dorr rebellion in 1842 [and 1843], was a representative [from the Second District of Rhode Island] in [the United States] Congress [from 04 March 1845 to 03 March 1847; was defeated when he ran for the United States Senate in 1845; moved to South Kingston, Washington County, Rhode Island in 1846, continued the practice of law until his death], and died in Kingsbury [Kingston, Washington County], Rhode Island, 27 June 1852 [at sixty years of age.
