Christoph ZIEGENFUSS, of Ziegenfuss brothers, butchers, Fountain City 
[Buffalo County, Wisconsin], is the elder brother, and was born 13 December 
1837 in Prussia. In 1861 Christoph enlisted in Company F, Twelfth Illinois 
Infantry, and was discharged in 1864. He has been Justice of the Peace, 
Village Trustee, and Marshal of Fountain City. Christoph ZIEGENFUSS married 
[Miss?] Teresa [Theresia] REID, a native of Baden. They have five children: 
George, Lena, Mary, William, and Eddie. [In the 1880 census of Fountain 
City: Christ. ZIEGENFUSS, forty-three, butcher, born in Prussia, about 1837 
by his census age, to parents also born in Prussia; his wife Theresia, 
thirty-seven, born in Baden, about 1843, to parents also born there; and his 
five children, all born in Wisconsin: (1) George M., fourteen, butcher 
apprentice, born about 1866; (2) Lena M., eleven, born about 1869; (3) Mary 
A., eight, born about 1872; (4) Wilhelm H. (William in the bio), six, born 
about 1874; and (5) Edward M., three, born about 1877.]

Michael ZIEGENFUSS, the younger brother, was born 14 April 1843 in the same 
place [Prussia]. In 1861 he enlisted in Company G, Nineteenth Illinois 
Infantry, and was discharged in 1862. Michael ZIEGENFUSS married Lena 
[Magdalena] REID, of Baden; they have four children: Aloise, Herman, Emma, 
Kate. [In the 1880 census of Fountain City: Michael ZIEGENFUSS, 
thirty-seven, butcher, born in Prussia, about 1843 from his census age, to 
parents also born in Prussia; his wife, Magdalena, thirty, born in Baden to 
parents also born there; and his four children, all born in Wisconsin: (1) 
Alois, nine, born about 1871; (2) Hermann, seven, born about 1873; (3) 
Emma, three, born about 1877; and (4) Katharina (Kate in the biography), 
one, born about 1879.] 

George ZIEGENFUSS, father of Christoph and Michael, was born in 1806 in 
Prussia. In 1852 he came to America with his family, and their first 
location was in Galena [Jo Daviess County], Illinois, where they lived three 
years, when they removed to this place [Fountain City, Buffalo County, 
Wisconsin]. His business has been and still is brewing. George ZIEGENFUSS 
married Catherine [Katharina?] ENGLEHART, who was born in Prussia. They have 
four children living: Mary, John, Christoph and Michael. [In the 1880 
census of Foutain City: George ZIEGENFUSS, seventy-three, a retired brewer, 
born in Prussia, about 1807 from his census age, to parents also born in 
Prussia; resides with his wife, Katharina, seventy-one, born in Prussia, 
about 1809, to parents also born there.]

[Also enumerated in the 1880 census of Fountain City, Buffalo County, 
Wisconsin, was John ZIEGENFUSS, forty-six, brewer, born in Prussia, about 
1834 by his census age, to parents also born in Prussia; residing with his 
wife, Regina ZIEGENFUSS, thirty-eight, born in France, about 1842, to parents 
also born in France. Was John is also a son of George ZIEGENFUSS? If so he 
would have been the middle brother, born between Christoph and Michael. 
George's occupation in the 1880 census is given as "retired brewer." If John 
was a son of George, did he take over George's brewing business? Bracketed
