SCHERER, Albert History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, p 167 Albert SCHERER, hotel, Fountain City [Buffalo County, Wisconsin], was born 16 November 1831 in Baden, Germany. In 1854 he came to America and landed in New York City, where he remained one year, employed as a baker. In 1857 he came to Fountain City. In 1863 he opened an hotel and has been in that business for the past eighteen years [since about 1863, calculated from the publishing date of biography]. In 1857 Albert SCHERER married [Miss?] Charlotte WAGNER, also born in Germany. [Spelling of Charlotte's surname and her place of birth not verified by submitter.] They have six children: Charlotte, Sophia, Ferdinand, Charles, Lena, and Amelia. [The family was enumerated in the 1880 census of Fountain City, Buffalo County: Albert SCHERER, forty-eight, hotel keeper, born in Baden (from his census age about 1832, which does not dispute the date of birth given in the biography) to parents also born in Baden; his wife, Charlotte, fifty, born about 1830 in Baden to parents also born there; and his six children, all born in Wisconsin to parents born in Baden, the first three at home and the last three attending school: (1) Charlotte, eighteen, single, born about 1862; (2) Sophia, sixteen, born about 1864; (3) Ferdinand, fourteen, born about 1866; (4) Charles, thirteen, born about 1867; (5) Helena, ten, born about 1870; and (6) Emilie, the youngest daughter, nine, born about 1871. Also in the household and unrelated to Albert are two boarders, both house painters: Gustav JOHNSON, twenty-six, single, born in Sweden to parents also born there; and Nathan BOYD, twenty-five, single, born in Wisconsin to a father born in Maryland and mother born in Wisconsin. Bracketed material added by submitter (who is not researching these surnames) to support and clarify information in the biography.] Submitted by Cathy Kubly
