SCHAETTLE, Charles History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, p 164 Charles SCHAETTLE, merchant, Alma [Buffalo County, Wisconsin], was born 20 [19] January 1827 in Oberndorf, Wurtemberg [Wurttemberg], Germany [son of Andreas Schaettle and Aloisa Stoffer]. He came to America in 1848, and located in Cincinnati [Hamilton County], Ohio, and for ten years was engaged in the leather business. In 1858 he removed to Buffalo City and engaged in merchandising. In 1866 he removed to this town [Alma] and continued in the same line of business. In 1852 he [Charles SCHAETTLE] married [Miss?] Julia KEMPTER. She was born in Rottweil, Wurtemberg, Germany. They have five children: Annie, Charles, Frank, George, and Romeo. [Is the Charles SCHAETTLE of this biography the same Charles SCHAETTLE who employed Richard R. KEMPTER as clerk? It does not appear that Charles SCHAETTLE married Mrs. Julia KEMPTER (born about 1840 in Germany) who was married to Richard R. KEMPTER. (See the Buffalo County biography of Richard R. KEMPTER). That Julia was still residing with her husband Richard and family when the 1880 census was taken. Although the biography was published a year later, the family of Charles SCHAETTLE (including wife Julia) was also enumerated in 1880 in Alma, Buffalo County: Charles SCHAETTLE, fifty-three, merchant, born in Germany (about 1827, which agrees with the year of birth given in the biography) to parents also born there; his wife, Julia, fifty-three born in Germany (by her census age about 1827; about thirteen years older than Julia KEMPTER, wife of Richard R. of the KEMPTER biography) to parents also born in Germany; and four sons, the last three born in Wisconsin: (1) Charles, twenty-four, single, store clerk, born (about 1856) in Ohio; (2) Frank, sixteen, single, store clerk, born about 1864; (3) George, thirteen, born about 1867; and (4) Romeo, eleven, born about 1869. Also in the household is Anna KEMPTER, seventy-six, mother-in-law, widow, born in Germany to parents also born in Germany; and three persons unrelated to the subject, a servant and two store clerks. Is the daughter Annie deceased, married, or residing elsewhere? Bracketed material added by submitter (who is not researching these surnames) to support and clarify information in the biography and raise questions.] Submitted by Cathy Kubly
