RIECK, Herman J. History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, p 164 H. J. RIECK [Alma, Buffalo County, Wisconsin], Justice, was born 24 June 1836 in Germany. In 1855 he came to America and settled in this county [Buffalo], and for six years was engaged in farming. In 1861 he removed to this town [Alma], and has been in various businesses since. In 1868 he went into the saloon keeping [business], which he has since continued. He has been Justice fourteen years, Town Clerk and Village Trustee, and other offices. He [Herman J. RIECK] married Louisa WUEFEL, a native of Prussia. They have seven children: Odelia, Ida, Gustav, Olive, Rosa, Albert, and Alma. [This RIECK family (surname could possibly be read as REICK) was enumerated in the 1880 census of Alma, Buffalo County, Wisconsin: Herman J. RIECK, forty three, saloon keeper, born in Prussia, by his census age about 1837, to parents also born there; his wife, Louisa RIECK, thirty-two, also born in Prussia (about 1848) to Prussian-born parents; and his seven children, all born in Wisconsin to parents born in Prussia: (1) Odelia H., eleven, thus born about 1869; (2) Ida (Eda?) A., ten, born about 1870; (3) Gustav A., eight, born about 1872; (4) Olive I., five, born about 1875; (5) Rosa A., three, born about 1877; and (6) Alma A. and (7) Alfred A., both five months. Bertha SCHLOSTEIN, unrelated to Herman J. RIECK, sixteen, servant, born in Missouri to parents born in Germany, completes the household.] [Also in the 1880 census of Alma is the family of Albert RIECK, thirty, hotel keeper, born in Germany to parents also born there. He is enumerated with his wife, Minnie, twenty, born in Germany to parents also born in Germany; and three others unrelated to Albert. Is Albert RIECK related to Herman J. RIECK, or is their presence in the same small community merely coincidence?
