NIEMANN, Charles History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, p 167 Charles NIEMANN, saloon, Fountain City [Buffalo County, Wisconsin], was born 06 August 1823 in the State of Mecklenburg [the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin or the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz?], Germany, and in 1853 came to America, and first settled in the State of Indiana, where he was employed constructing railroad. In August of 1855 he moved to Fountain City and worked in a saw mill, and in 1857 carried the mail between Fountain City and La Crosse [roughly forty miles]. At one time he was fourteen days making the trip on account of bad roads, and at another time when they were impassable for the snow, he hired C. W. GILBERT, who skated down the river [Black river?] to La Crosse and back, bringing with him 100 pounds of mail. Mr. NIEMANN continued at this business until 1869, and afterwards erected the large brick block where he now does business. He has been a member of the Lutheran church for twenty-two years. In 1860 at LaCrosse [LaCrosse County, Wisconsin] he [Charles NIEMANN] was married to [Miss?] Margaret CARRISCH [should be spelled CARISCH?], by whom he has one son and two daughters. [This NIEMAN (NIEMANN) family is enumerated in the 1880 census of Fountain City, Buffalo County, Wisconsin: Charles, age fifty-nine, saloon keeper, born in Prussia, about 1821 by his census age, to parents also born in Prussia; his wife Margareth, age forty-two, born in Switzerland, about 1838, to parents also born there; and two children of Charles, born in Wisconsin to a father born in Prussia and a mother born in Switzerland: (1) Christopher, age nineteen, single, teamster; and (2) Sophia, age five, born about 1875. The household also contains three male boarders unrelated to Charles NIEMANN. Thus one daughter is mentioned in the biography but not enumerated in the 1880 census. This daughter may have been born between the 1880 census enumeration and the date the text was published in 1881. Submitter did not check later census records.] [Assuming CARISCH was Margaret's maiden name, was she related to Charles CARISCH, age forty-four, born (about 1836 from his census age) in Prussia, one of the single males who boarded at the hotel of Martin NICK in Fountain City? Was she related to Balthasar CARISCH? Balthasar CARISCH was born in Switzerland, about 1832 per his 1880 census age, and resided in Fountain City with his wife Christina and four children. Bracketed material added by submitter (who is not researching these surnames) to support and clarify information given in the biography and to raise questions.] Submitted by Cathy Kubly
