MOOT, Hartman History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, p 164 Hartman MOOT, butcher, Alma [Buffalo County, Wisconsin], was born 11 August 1854 in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. He came to Wisconsin in 1873 and settled in Alma. He [Hartman MOOT] married Louisa KIRCHNER, a native of Germany. [Hartman MOOT is enumerated in the 1880 census of Alma, Buffalo County, Wisconsin, in the household of John W. TESTER: Hartman MOOT, age twenty-four, single, butcher, born in Pennsylvania, about 1856 by his census age, to parents both born in Germany. The TESTER family consists of John W., age thirty-five, hardware merchant, born in Switzerland, his wife Julia, age twenty-one, born in Wisconsin; his daughter, Irla L., age one; and one other boarder besides Hartman MOOT, also unrelated to John W. TESTER, namely John J. BERGIN, age fifty-eight, laborer, born in Switzerland.] [Since Hartman MOOT is single in this census, he must have married Louisa KIRCHNER between the enumeration of the 1880 census and the date in 1881 when the text was published. The August KIRCHNER family is enumerated in the 1880 census of Alma, Buffalo County, Wisconsin, and appears to contain Louisa, the future wife of Hartman MOOT: August KIRCHNER, age fifty-one, butcher (same occupation as Hartman MOOT), born in Prussia, about 1829 by his census age, to parents also born in Prussia; Bena KIRCHNER, his wife, age forty-three, born in Prussia (by her age about 1847) to parents also born there; daughter Louisa KIRCHNER, age nineteen, single, a telegraph apprentice, born in Prussia (by her census age about 1851) to parents born in Prussia; and son August KIRCHNER, age eleven, born in Wisconsin, about 1869. The proximity of these households suggests there was likely contact between Hartman MOOT and this Louisa KIRCHNER. The only other Louisa KIRCHNER in the 1880 census of Buffalo County, a resident of Waumandee Township, is the thirty-two-year-old, Swiss-born, wife of Charles KIRCHNER, and the mother of his five children. Also in this Charles KIRCHNER household is his father, John KIRCHNER, and his uncle, Augustus KIRCHNER. Were John and Charles KIRCHNER related to August KIRCHNER? Was Hartman MOOT the Hartman MOOT who died (submitter did not view death record) on 22 February 1932 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois?] [The only other MOOT submitter found in the 1880 Buffalo County census was also in Alma: Andrus (Andrew?) MOOT, age twenty-four, single, born in Pennsylvania (as was Hartman MOOT), about 1856 by his census age, to parents born in Pennsylvania. Andrus was enumerated with fifty-nine others, employed in logging at the Beef Slough works, where logs were sorted and boomed before sending them down the Mississippi in huge rafts. Were Hartman and Andrus MOOT related? Variations in the surname MOOT include MOOTS, MOOTZ, MOOTE. Bracketed material added by submitter (who is not researching these surnames) to support and clarify information given in the biography and to raise questions.] Submitted by Cathy Kubly
