McVEY, Newton History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, p 163 Newton McVEY, physician and surgeon, Alma [Buffalo County, Wisconsin], was born 11 October 1845 in Marion County, Indiana. He graduated at the Indiana Medical College, and received his diploma on 26 February 1875. He had been in the practice of medicine some time in the city of Indianapolis [Marion County, Indiana] before he graduated. In 1875 he made a permanent location in this village [Alma, Buffalo County, Wisconsin], and has thereby become one of Alma's staunchest citizens. Mr. M. [Newton McVEY] was for a short time in the U. S. A. [U. S. Army] as drummer. He enlisted in Company A, Forty-seventh Indiana, in 1865, and was discharged the same year. [The Civil War officially ended in early April 1865.] In the same year he came to Alma [1875?] he married Nancy L. FURGASON, who was also born in Marion County [Indiana]. They have two children, Elsie and Carrie. [The McVEY family is enumerated in the 1880 census of Alma, Buffalo County, Wisconsin: Newton McVEY, age thirty-five, physician, born in Indiana, about 1845 from his census age, which agrees with the year of birth given in the biography; his wife, Nancy L. McVEY, age thirty-six, born in Indiana, about 1844, to parents who were both born in Ohio; and two daughters: (1) Elsie McVEY, age three, born in Wisconsin, about 1877, to parents born in Indiana; and (2) Martha C. McVEY, age two, born in Wisconsin, about 1878 by her census age, to parents born in Indiana. Also in the household is a servant unrelated to Newton McVEY, namely Monica SCHNEIDER, single, age eighteen, she and her parents all born in Wisconsin.
