McKENZIE, Duncan J. History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, p 163 D. J. [Duncan J.] McKENZIE, lumber inspector, District No. 9, Alma [Buffalo County, Wisconsin], was born 04 July 1848 in Glengary County, Canada. He came to Wisconsin in 1871 and located at Chippewa Falls [Chippewa County] and engaged in scaling logs. In 1877 he was appointed by the government to fill his present position. He married Catherine E. HORTON, a native of Potter County, Pennsylvania. They have one child, Laverne E. [The household of Duncan J. McKENZIE is enumerated in the 1880 census of Alma: Duncan J., age thirty-one, lumber inspector, born in Canada (by his census age about 1849) to parents also born there; his wife Elisabeth, age twenty-four, born in Pennsylvania (about 1856) to parents also born in Pennsylvania; and daughter Lavern (Laverne), age months, born in 1880. There are five individuals unrelated to Duncan also living in the household, most lumbermen or log sealers. Also enumerated in the household is Duncan's brother, James McKENZIE, age twenty-one, log sealer, born in Canada (by his census age about 1859) to parents also born there.] [John McKENZIE, who is listed in the 1880 census of Alma in a household with almost sixty others, most of whom are loggers, may also be related: John McKENZIE, age twenty one, works on the Beef Slough, born in Canada, from his census age about 1859, to parents also born there. (This household beings with H. B. SEDGWICK, to whom John is unrelated.) The Beef Slough, a tributary of the Chippewa River, was used to sort and boom logs before sending them in huge rafts down the Mississippi. The 1880 census supports the information given in the 1881 biography of Duncan J. McKENZIE. Bracketed material added by submitter (who is not researching these surnames) to support and clarify information given in the biography and to raise questions.] Submitted by Cathy Kubly
