MANN, Joel History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, p 170 Joel MANN, retired farmer, Gilmanton [Buffalo County, Wisconsin], was born 18 December 1819 in Orange County, Vermont. He came to Wisconsin in 1861 and bought some land and a mill site in Buffalo County, in company with his father, and then returned to Vermont. In 1862 he came back and erected a mill on the site which he had previously bought, and which he still owns, having made his home there ever since. [Gilmanton was once called Mann's Mills.] He now makes his home with his sister, Mrs. E. M. KENYAN, who was married in 1866 to W. H. KENYAN. [According to the Buffalo County biography of John CLARKE, he and a Mr. BURLER built the first grist mill in Buffalo County, but it is ambiguous as to whether it was originally powered by water or steam. If the mill erected by Joel MANN was not originally steam-powered, his source of water power at Gilmanton would have been Elk Creek, a large branch of the Buffalo (aka Beef) River.] [The 1880 census of Gilmanton, Buffalo County, Wisconsin, shows a household containing Joel MANN, age sixty, farmer, born in Vermont (about 1820 from his census age) to parents also born in Vermont; and Louisa MANN, mother of Joel, a widow, age eighty-two, born in Massachusetts (about 1798 from her census age) to parents both born in Massachusetts. Bracketed material added by submitter (who is not researching these surnames) to support and clarify information given in the biography and to raise questions.] Submitted by Cathy Kubly
