LAWRENCE, C. W. History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, p 163 C. W. LAWRENCE, proprietor of a livery barn, Alma [Buffalo County, Wisconsin], was born 16 April 1854 in Ticonderoga [County], New York; came to Wisconsin in 1858, and located with his parents at New Lisbon [County, Wisconsin], where they remained two years, and then removed to Alma, where they have since lived. He [C. W. LAWRENCE] married Katie HOFFER, a native of Jefferson County. [Does the author mean Jefferson County, New York, or Jefferson County, Wisconsin? There is a Charles W. LAWRENCE enumerated in the 1880 census of Alma Buffalo County, Wisconsin, thirty-one years of age, saloon keeper, born in New York, by his census age about 1849, to parents also born in New York; and his wife, Katie, age twenty-six, born in New York, about 1854, to a mother born in Switzerland and a father born in France. Although this Charles W. was born in New York and married to a woman named Katie, he could only be the C. W. of the biography if the year of birth in the biography (or age in the census) is incorrect, and if between the time the 1880 census was enumerated and the 1881 biography was published, he gave up the livery business and opened a saloon.
