KOSCHUETZ, John History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, p 167 John KOSCHUETZ, brewer, Fountain City [Cross Township (per 1878 Atlas), Buffalo County, Wisconsin], was born 25 December 1848 in Germany; in 1873 came to America, locating at Fountain City, where he worked in the brewery for Behlmer & Fiedler. In 1874 he rented the same and ran it for five years, and in May of 1880 bought it for himself. He now brews from 400 to 500 barrels per year. [Was Henry FIEDLER a partner in the firm of Behlmer and Fiedler? The Buffalo County biography of Henry FIEDLER relates that Henry was in the brewery business until 1880, after which he was employed as a butcher and beer agent. Did Henry FIELDER afterward serve as beer agent for John KOSCHUETZ and sell his beer? Was Henry BEHLMER the other partner in the firm of Behlmer & Fielder? The Buffalo County biography of Henry BEHLMER states he came to the village of Fountain City in 1854, and was employed in various businesses. Other connections between the families appear in the 1880 census, e. g., Paulina FIEDLER, age sixteen, servant, is enumerated in the household of John P. BEHLMER, a Fountain City hotel keeper.] He [John KOSCHUETZ] was married to Louisa ERHART, who was born in Fountain City. They are both members of the Catholic church. They have one son, Frankie. [The Catholic church in Fountain City was built in 1860, and in 1881 had a membership of about 100 families (p 166). The 1880 census of Fountain City noted a Catholic priest, J. M. UIKER, and three Sisters of St. Francis. The KOSCHUETZ family was also enumerated in the 1880 census of Fountain City, Buffalo County, Wisconsin: John KOSCHUTZ (KOSCHUETZ?), age thirty, brewer, born in Austria, from his census age about 1850, to parents also born in Austria; his wife Louisa, age nineteen, born in Wisconsin (about 1861) to parents both born in Wurtenberg (Wurttemberg); and two brewery workers unrelated to John. Perhaps the son, Frankie KOSCHUTZE, was born between the enumeration of the 1880 census and the date in 1881 when the text went to press? Note that the Buffalo County biography of Henry BEHLMER states that Henry married Mary ERHART, a native of Iowa. Was Louisa ERHART (born about 1850) related to Mary ERHART (who was born about 1854)? ERHART could also be spelled ERHARD or ERHARDT.
