KAMMERER, S. History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, p 167 S. KAMMERER, miller, Fountain City [Cross Township (per 1878 Atlas), Buffalo County, Wisconsin], was born 18 September 1850 in Switzerland; came to America in 1872 and located in Green Lake, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. He rented and ran a grist mill four years. In April 1878 he came to Wisconsin, and was in various occupations until the spring of 1881, when he purchased his present mill. It is the first flouring mill built in this [Buffalo] county. Mr. KAMMERER intends to put in a few improvements, and will soon have a capacity of one hundred barrels per day. [When the 1880 census was taken, S. KAMMERER had not yet purchased the mill, nor does the biography mention him being married. For those reasons he is likely the mill worker in the following family enumerated in the 1880 census of Waumandee (north of Fountain City), Buffalo County, Wisconsin (p 252): John OCHSNER, head of household, married, age forty-eight, miller, born in Switzerland, about 1832 from his census age, to parents also born there; his wife, Louisa OCHSNER, age forty-one, born in Switzerland to parents also born there; and the following children, all born in Wisconsin to parents who were both born in Switzerland: son Adolph OCHSNER, age eighteen, mill worker; daughter Lena OCHSNER, age sixteen, at home; son Rudolph OCHSNER, age nine, attending school; and son Henry OCHSNER, age three. The others, unrelated to John OCHSNER, include: Segimond (Sigimond? Sigmond?) KAMMERER, single, age twenty-nine, mill worker, born in Switzerland, about 1851 by his census age, which does not dispute the year of birth given in the biography, to parents also born there; and two Prussian-born laborers: Anton GLODOWSKI, age nineteen; and Simon SOBIECH, age twenty-three. If Sigmond KAMMERER is the "S. KAMMERER" of the biography, did he purchase the mill operated or owned by John OCHSNER? Surnames with spellings similar to KAMMERER include KEMMERER and KAMUELLER. Bracketed material added by submitter (who is not researching these surnames) to support and clarify information given in the biography and to raise questions.] Submitted by Cathy Kubly
