IDE, Daniel B. History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, p 169 Daniel B. IDE, of the firm of Ide & Darlong, general merchants, Mondovi [Buffalo County, Wisconsin], was born 16 December 1832 in Vermont, and came to Wisconsin with his parents in 1847, locating at Fox Lake [Dodge County?]. In the fall of 1858 he opened the first store in the Town of Naples [Buffalo County] in company with L. WAST, in a small building near where the Strong Hotel now [1881] stands, on Main Street. In 1860 he [Daniel B. IDE] was married to Miss Charlotte A. WAST, daughter of Charles WAST, one of the early settlers in the Town of Naples. They have three children, one son and two daughters. Mr. IDE has been School Clerk for one term, and was a liberal contributor the Baptist church which was erected in 1873. [Submitter found no WAST in the 1880 census of Buffalo County, but did find families with the surnames RAST, WEST, and EDE.] [The Daniel B. IDE family is enumerated in the 1880 census of Mondovi, Buffalo County, Wisconsin (p 197): Daniel, age forty-eight, merchant, born in Canada, about 1832 by his census age, to parents both born in Vermont, which supports the information given in the biography. His wife, Charlotte A., is age forty-two, born in New York, about 1838 by her census age, to a father (according to the biography, Charles WAST) born in Vermont, and a mother born in New York. Three children of Daniel B. IDE, all born in Wisconsin (to a father born in Canada and a mother born in New York) are also listed in the census: (1) Irwin D. IDE, age seventeen, store clerk, born about 1863 by his census age; (2) Alice M. IDE, age ten, born about 1870; and (3) Clara A. IDE, age three, born about 1877. Completing the household is a servant, unrelated to Daniel B. IDE, named Christine LAUTER, single, age twenty-one, born in Illinois to parents both born in Prussia. Thus one son and two daughters are enumerated in the census, supporting the information given about the sex and number of Daniel B. IDE's children given in the biography.] [Also enumerated in the 1880 census of Mondovi is the family of Frederick J. IDE, age sixty-one, carpenter and joiner, born in Vermont, about 1819 by his census age, to parents also born there. His wife, Atlanta IDE, is also age sixty-one, born in Canada to parents who were born in New Hampshire. Also in the family is a son of Frederick J. IDE, Gilbert IDE, age twenty-three, born in Wisconsin, about 1857 by his census age, to a father born in Vermont and a mother born in Canada. Is Frederick J. IDE the father (and his wife Atlanta the stepmother) of Daniel B. IDE? Is Frederick J. IDE an uncle of Daniel B.?] [In another household in the 1880 Mondovi census is Ole IDE, single, age twenty-two, laborer, born in Norway to parents also born there, who resides in a household with four other males, also Norwegian laborers, to whom Ole is unrelated. Ole IDE is unlikely related to either Daniel B. or Frederick J. IDE. Bracketed material added by submitter (who is not researching these surnames) to support and clarify information given in the biography and to raise questions.] Submitted by Cathy Kubly
