HUEFNER, Paul History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, p 167 Paul HUEFNER, grain dealer, Fountain City [Cross Township (per 1878 Atlas), Buffalo County, Wisconsin], was born 29 June 1839 in Kathea [?], Bavaria, Germany. When he was eleven years of age [1850?] his parents came to America and located in Southbridge, Worcester County, Massachusetts, where they lived until 1860, when they came to Madison [Dane County, Wisconsin]. Two years later [1862?] they again removed to Hastings [Dakota County], Minnesota. Mr. HUEFNER has been permanently located in this place [Fountain City, Buffalo County, Wisconsin] since 1870. He has two warehouses in Alma, one in Buffalo City [in Belvidere Township per 1878 map], and two here [Fountain City]. Paul HUEFNER married Louisa DEMELER, a native of England. They have one child, Ferdinand. [There is a Paul HUEFNER in the 1880 census of Fountain City: Paul HUEFNER, age thirty-nine, wheat merchant, born in Bavaria (about 1841 from his census age, close to the birth year of 1839 given in the biography) to parents also born in Bavaria. He resides with his sister, Regina HUEFNER, single, who keeps house, age thirty-four, born in Bavaria (from her age about 1846) to parents also born there. Is Louisa, the wife of Paul HUEFNER deceased? Also in this family is a son of Paul, also named Paul HUEFNER, age ten, born in Minnesota to a father born in Bavaria (identified by the census as Paul) and a mother born in England (Louisa DEMELER?). Completing the family is Valentine HUEFNER, the father of wheat merchant Paul, seventy-six years of age, a widower, no occupation given, born in Bavaria, about 1804 from his census age, to parents also born there.] [In another household in Fountain City (also on page 296) is the family of Ferdinand HUEFNER, age forty-seven, grain dealer, born in Bavaria, about 1833 from his census age, to parents also born there. He resides with his wife, Margarett (Margaretta?) R. HUEFNER, age forty-age, born in Wurtenberg (Wurttemburg) to parents also born there. Completing the household is Elisabeth HEPP, unrelated to Ferdinand, eighteen years of age, a servant, born in Wisconsin (about 1862 from her age) to parents both born in Prussia. The age of this Ferdinand HUEFNER eliminates him as a son of Paul of the biography, but he is likely related. Bracketed material added by submitter (who is not researching these surnames) to support and clarify information given in the biography and to raise questions.] Submitted by Cathy Kubly
