HEPP, Frederick History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, p 167 Frederick HEPP, soda water manufactory at Fountain City [Cross Township (per 1878 Atlas), Buffalo County, Wisconsin], was born 13 February 1832 in Prussia. In 1852 he came to the United States, locating at Galena [Jo Daviess County], Illinois, where he worked in a flouring mill, and afterwards in the lead mines. In 1855 he came to Fountain City, and in 1856 returned to Galena and bought a yoke of oxen, which he brought up the river on a boat to Fountain City, and commenced breaking a farm. In 1858 he was mail agent from Fountain City to St. Croix [St. Croix County, northwest of Buffalo County], a distance of 150 miles by land. He afterwards followed teaming until 1874, when he commenced his present business. He has been Town Treasurer of Fountain City, also a member of the Town Board for two terms, and Constable, and is a member of the Catholic church. [From p 166 of the same source: The Catholic church in Fountain City was built in 1860, and in 1881 had a membership of about 180.] In 1857 he [Frederick HEPP] was married to Sophia MULTHAUP, who was born in Hanover, Germany. They have eight children: Matilda, Mary, Elizabeth, Tracy, Rosa, Adolph, Lena, and Ragena. ["Friedrich" HEPP is enumerated in the 1880 census of Fountain City, Buffalo County, Wisconsin (p 301): forty-eight years of age, a manufacturer of soda water, born in Prussia to parents also born there, about 1832 by his census age, which supports the year of birth given in the biography. His wife, Sophia, is forty-two years of age, born in Prussia to Prussian-born parents, about 1838 by her census age. Seven of the eight children are listed in the family, all born in Wisconsin to parents who were both born in Prussia: (1) Mathilda (Matilda of the bio), age twenty, born about 1860; (2) Mary, age nineteen, at home, born about 1861; (3) Theresia age sixteen, at home, born about 1864; (4) Rosa, age nine, born about 1871; (5) Ida, age seven, born about 1873; (6) Lena, age three (Magdalena of the bio), born about 1877; and (7) Regina, age seven months (Regena of the bio). Adolph, who is not listed in the census, was probably born between the 1880 census enumeration and the date in 1881 when the biography text went to press. This would account for the discrepancy in the number of children.
