FUOTER, Samuel History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, p 163 Samuel FUOTER, saloon, Alma [Buffalo County, Wisconsin], was born 01 November 1846 in Switzerland. He came to the America in 1868, and located in Alma. He married [Miss?] Margaret MING [?], a native of Switzerland. They have four children: Anton, Christ, Samuel, and Lillie. [Submitter strongly believes "MING" to be a typo in the original text. The surname "WING" would be believable, but submitter wonders if Margaret's surname, assuming it was Swiss, was an incorrect spelling or corruption of "WENGER" written as "WENG." If her surname was Swiss and actually began with an "M," it would be believable as "MENGLI" or "MENLI."] [The family of Samuel FUOTER is enumerated in the 1880 census of Alma, Buffalo County, Wisconsin: Samuel, age thirty-four, saloon keeper, born in Switzerland, about 1846 by his census age, to parents who were also born in Switzerland (all of which agrees with what is given in the biography); his wife, Margret or Margaret, age twenty-eight, born in Switzerland, from her census age about 1852, her parents also born in Switzerland; and three children, all born in Wisconsin: (1) Anton, attending school, age six, thus born about 1874; (2) Christian, age five, by his census age born about 1875; and (3) Samuel, age three, therefore born about 1877. An unmarried eighteen-year-old female servant completes the household. Lillie, who is not enumerated in the 1880 census, was likely born between the 1880 census enumeration and the publishing of the text in 1881.] [There are three households in the 1880 census of Buffalo County, Wisconsin, which may contain persons related to Samuel FUOTER. The heads of all three of families were born in Switzerland to Swiss-born parents, and all three families also reside in Alma. The spelling of their surnames in the handwriting is open to question. One is the Andrew and Anna FONTER or FUOTER family. Andrew is a laborer, twenty-eight years of age, thus born about 1852, and besides his wife has two children, both born in Wisconsin, Paula and Martin. A second possibly related family is that of Christian and Albertena FOUTER or FUOTER. Christian, who operates a livery, is twenty-three years of age, and resides with his wife and four-year-old son, Edward. A third household enumerated in 1880 and possibility related to Samuel FUOTER is the family of Martin and Elisabeth FOUTER or FUOTER. Martin is a laborer, forty-three years of age, thus born about 1837, and besides his wife resides with his two children, who are not old enough yet to attend school. Bracketed material added by submitter (who is not researching these surnames) to support and clarify information given in the biography and to raise questions.] Submitted by Cathy Kubly
