[Both of his parents were also born in Germany according to the 1880 Alma census, p 324 C. Martin's age in this census is thirty-seven, consistent with the year of birth given in the biography.] In 1868 he came to America, and first settled in Eau Claire [Eau Claire County, Wisconsin], and was employed as a cigar maker for nine years. In 1877 he removed to Alma, and established his present business. In 1874 Martin EXEL married Clara THEISEN [a maiden name?], who was born in Wisconsin [about 1855, calculated from her age of twenty-five years in the 1880 census; her father was born in Prussia, and her mother in Germany.] Martin and Clara EXEL have four children [alternate spellings of names, not bracketed, are per 1880 census; approximate years of birth (calculated from census ages) have also been added]: (1) Mary, born about 1876; (2) Sopha, enumerated as "Sophia," born about 1877; (3) Matilda, born about 1879; and (4) Martin, listed as "Martin August" in the census, born about 1880.
