CLARKE, John History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, p 166 John CLARKE, machinist, Fountain City [Cross Township (per 1878 Atlas), Buffalo County, Wisconsin], was born 20 October 1824 in England. He came to America in 1852, and located in Jersey City [Hudson County (per 1895 Atlas), New Jersey]. From there he went to Howard County, Indiana, and from there to Fond du Lac County [Wisconsin], and in 1855 came to Fountain City [Buffalo County]. He, in company with a Mr. BURLER, of Alma, built the steam grist mill now owned by Mr. KAMMERER. It was the first mill built in the [Buffalo] county. He [John CLARKE] sold his interest to Mr. BURLER and was engaged in various occupations until 1865, when he began his present business. He has been Deputy Sheriff one term and District Attorney one term. John CLARKE married [Miss?] Elizabeth WARING, a native of England. They have six children, Marion, Lillie, Carrie, Grace, Fanny, and George. [This family is enumerated in the 1880 census of Fountain City, Buffalo County, Wisconsin, p 298 A (approximate year of birth calculated from census age and added): John CLARKE, age fifty-five, millwright and engineer, born in England about 1825 to parents also born there; his wife "Elisabeth," age fifty-three, born in England about 1867; daughter "Lilly," age twenty-six, a teacher, born in Wisconsin about 1864; daughter "Carry," age twenty, also a teacher, born in Wisconsin about 1860; and son George, age eighteen, a farmer, born in Wisconsin about 1862.
