CARISCH, C. History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, p 166 C. CARISCH, dealer in grain, Fountain City [Cross Township (1878 Atlas), Buffalo County, Wisconsin], was born 15 November 1847 in Switzerland. When he was two years old his parents came to America and settled in Sauk City [Prairie du Sac Township (per 1878 Atlas), Sauk County, Wisconsin]. In 1857 they went to La Crosse [La Crosse County, Wisconsin], and they moved again in 1859, to this county [Buffalo] and settled on a farm. In 1864, in company with his brother, C. CARISCH opened a general store in this place [Fountain City]. They continued that until 1879, when their store was burned. Mr. C. CARISCH has since been in the grain business. C. CARISCH married Victoria GILBERT [a maiden name?], a native of Illinois. They have five children: Frank G., Jennie, Frederick, Allie, and Maud. [Enumerated in the 1880 census for Fountain City, Buffalo County, Wisconsin, p 297 C, is the household of Christ CARISCH: Christ, age thirty-one (thus born about 1849, not 1847 as stated for the biography subject), a warehouse laborer, born in Switzerland to parents also born there; his wife Anna, age twenty-six (thus born about 1854) in Wisconsin to parents born in Prussia; and four children, all born in Wisconsin: George, age five; Lena, age four, Emil age two, and Eduard, age seven months. This is not consistent with the names given in the biography. The only other "C. CARISCH" found in the 1880 census for Buffalo County is a Christoph "CARISH," residing in Alma, single, age eighteen (thus born about 1862), born in Wisconsin to parents born in Switzerland. His occupation is hotel clerk, and he is enumerated in the household of Emil LOVNHARDY, a Swiss hotel keeper. Submitter is not researching these surnames.
