BUMP, Gile O. History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, p 169 Gile O. BUMP, wagon maker, Mondovi, [Naples Township, Buffalo County, Wisconsin], was born 05 September 1839 in Washington County, New York, and came with his parents to Wisconsin in 1856, locating in the Town of Naples. His step father, Robert NELSON, built the first frame house in this town [Naples], and was also the first Postmaster, holding that position for fifteen years. He [Robert NELSON] died in 1874. The subject of this sketch remained at home on the farm until August 1862, when he enlisted in Company G, Twenty-fifth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, serving until the close of the war [1865]. He had three brothers who were also in the war, two of them being in the same company and regiment with himself, and who served until the war closed. Gile O. BUMP was with Sherman on his march to the sea, and was also in a good many other important engagements. After the war he returned home and learned the trade of wagon making, and has followed that ever since. [The brothers of Gile O. BUMP who served in Company G, 25th WVI, were John H. BUMP and Menzus R. BUMP. Another brother, Jay W. BUMP, also a Mondovi resident, served in Company K. There are about twenty other BUMP who served in other Wisconsin regiments, among them Harvey BUMP and Manford BUMP, both buried in Walnut Hill Cemetery in Sauk County, Wisconsin, and Samuel BUMP, who was a resident of Fond du Lac County.] In the spring of 1870 Gile O. BUMP was married to Miss Minnie MORSE, daughter of Rev. B. F. MORSE, of Mondovi. [The MORSE is enumerated in the 1880 Mondovi, Buffalo County, Wisconsin, census, on p 198 D. The family includes: Benjamin F. MORSE, clergyman, age sixty-five years, born in New York, about 1815 by his age in the census, to a father born in Connecticut and a mother born in Massachusetts; wife Betsy E., also age sixty-five, born in New York to parents who were both born in Connecticut; daughter Florence L., a teacher, age twenty one, born in Wisconsin (about 1859); and son William, also a teacher, age nineteen, born (about 1861) in Wisconsin.] Their family [the family of Gile O. and Minnie (MORSE) BUMP] consists of three sons: Clayton C., Benjamin F. [named after Mrs. BUMP's father?], and Herbert Lee. Mr. BUMP is a member of the Ancient Order of United Workmen, Mondovi Lodge No. 23, and of the Good Templars, being a temperance man in every sense of the word. [The family of Gile O. BUMP is enumerated on p 199A of the 1880 census of Mondovi, Buffalo County, Wisconsin: Gile O., wagon maker, age forty-one, born in New York, about 1839 by his census age, which agrees with the birth year given in the biography, to parents also born in New York; his wife, "Arminda A.," age thirty-one, born in New York, about 1849 by her age, to parents also born in New York; son Benjamin F., age six, born in Wisconsin; and son Herbert Lee, age three, born in Wisconsin.] [On the same census page is Hurlburt C. GILES, physician, age twenty-six, born in New York to parents also born there, residing with his wife, Minerva, age twenty-six, born in Wisconsin to parents born in New York. Since sons sometimes had given names based on maiden names of mothers, grandmothers, etc., it is possible Gile BUMP has a connection to the GILES surname. Submitter is not researching these surnames; bracketed material added to support and clarify information given in the biography.] Submitted by Cathy Kubly
