BARROWS, Hiram Calvin History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, p 169 Mr. [Hiram Calvin] BARROWS, of Rowe & Barrows [see also the Buffalo County biography of his business partner, Irwin ROWE], dealers in groceries, glass, and queens ware, Mondovi [Naples Township, Buffalo County, Wisconsin], was born 19 September 1846 in [South Corinth, Saratoga County] New York, [the sixth of eight children born to Hiram C. BARROWS and Naomi Leggett WING, who came to Gilmanton, Buffalo County, Wisconsin, in May of 1860.] After coming to the town of Naples he [the subject of this biography] engaged in farming, at which he continued until the breaking out of the war. He enlisted in Company D, Fifty-third Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, in March of 1865, serving until 29 May [1865], when he was disabled for further service and returned home. [The Civil War began in 1861 and ended in 1865. Either Mr. BARROWS did not enlist just after the war began, or the year of his enlistment, 1865, is a typo in the original text. Hiram C. BARROWS is listed in the Wisconsin Rosters as having been a member of the Fifty-third Wisconsin Infantry. Submitter did not seek the date of enlistment.] Mr. BARROWS first became a resident of Mondovi in 1860. [Hiram C. BARROWS is listed in the 1880 census for Mondovi, Buffalo County, Wisconsin, p 197 B. He was then thirty-three years of age, a butcher, born in New York, about 1847 from his age. His second wife, whom he married in October 1866 in Mondovi, Martha S. (Martha Stokes ROWE), is listed as thirty two years of age, a milliner, born in Pennsylvania, about 1846 by her age, to parents also born there. The children listed are: (1) Arthur F. (Arthur Franklin), age twelve (born about 1868 by his census age; actual date of birth 20 November 1867), in New York; (2) Wilbur E., age eight, born (about 1872 by his census age; actual date of birth 12 July 1871) in Wisconsin; and (3) Etha (Etha Genevieve) age six, born (about 1874 by her census age; actual date of birth 12 July 1873) in Wisconsin. Also in the household are one servant and Josephine ROWE, sister-in-law of Hiram C. BARROWS, age twenty, school teacher, born (about 1860) in Pennsylvania to parents also born there. The subject of the biography, Hiram C. BARROWS, died in October 1918. His second wife, Martha, died in 1901 in Eau Claire County, Wisconsin. The father of Hiram C., also named Hiram C., died in September 1866 in Mondovi, Buffalo County, Wisconsin, age fifty-nine. Submitter, who is not researching ROWE or BARROWS, has included additional material with this biography to support the information given in the biography before submitting it to this website.] Submitted by Cathy Kubly
