AVERY, Walter C. History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, p 162 W. [Walter] C. AVERY, blacksmith, Alma [Buffalo County, Wisconsin], was born 17 January 1847 in England. [Mr. AVERY's parents were also born in England, according to the 1880 census of Alma (p 319 B), and his age, thirty-three, is consistent with the year of birth given in the biography.] He came to America in 1854 and settled in Lake County, Illinois. In 1888 he came to this county [Buffalo] and established a business at Mesha Mokwa [Misha Mokwa, in Nelson Township, just east of the Beef Slough. The Beef Slough was extensively used for logging until the mid to late 1890's.] W. C. AVERY was first married to [Miss?] Margaret EVANS of Illinois. His second marriage was to Susanna LATSCHAN, a native of Canada. [She is enumerated as "Susan" in the 1880 Census of Alma, Buffalo County, twenty-seven years of age, born in Canada (about 1853 by her age), whose parents were both born in Pennsylvania.] They [Walter C. and Susan AVERY] have three children [approximate years of birth calculated from census ages and added]: (1) William, born about 1874; (2) Samaria, born about 1876; and (3) Victoria, born about 1879.
