AUER, John G. History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, p 162 J. [John] G. AUER, merchant, Alma [Buffalo County, Wisconsin], was born 24 June 1840 in Switzerland [to parents who were also born there]. He came to America in 1866, and his first location was in the city of Washington, D. C., and for a year he was engaged as a carpenter and builder. In 1867 he removed to this town [Alma, Buffalo County] and continued in the same line of business until 1973, when he established himself as a dealer in furniture. He has since added to his business groceries and confectionery. In 1864 he [John G. AUER] married [Miss?] Barbara MOSER, a native of Germany. [The 1880 Census for Alma, Buffalo County, Wisconsin, p 319 A, gives Switzerland as the country of birth for both Barbara AUER and her parents.] They [J. G. and Barbara AUER] have six children [all born in Wisconsin according to the 1880 census; approximate years of birth calculated from ages in census and added]: (1) George, born about 1870; (2) Lydia, born about 1872; (3) Bertha, born about 1874; (4) William, born about 1876; (5) Alice, born about 1879, and (5) Clara. [A child named "Clara" is not listed in the 1880 census. There is a person unrelated to John G. AUER living in the household: Clara SCHNEIDER, age forty-four, born in Austria to parents who were also born there. There was a J. AUER residing not that far north of Alma (in Durand, Pepin County, Wisconsin) who in 1883 married Louisa KNEER of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, who may be related to John G. AUER. Submitter is not researching SCHNEIDER, AUER, or OYER. The information included in brackets is added only to support the information given in the biography before submitting it to this website.] Submitted by Cathy Kubly
