Bennington MERRILL, Orsamus C. Vermont Historical Magazine, No. XI, October 1867, p 166 (extracted from a section on the history of Bennington, Bennington County, Vermont) Orsamus C. MERRILL was born 18 June 1775, came to Bennington [Bennington County, Vermont] about 1800, and was admitted to the bar in June 1804. He is still living, yet his advanced age and retirement from the cares of life is thought to make it not improper to say that he long enjoyed the confidence of his fellow citizens of the town and state. He was for several years postmaster, a lieutenant colonel in the army during the War of 1812, a member of Congress in 1817-1818 and 1819, and was afterwards a member of the State Council for five years, a representative to the Assembly and judge of probate.
