Bennington GRAY, John Vermont Historical Magazine, No. XI, October 1867, pp 134-135 (Entitled "Gray Family," this article was extracted from a section on the history of Arlington, Bennington County) John GRAY was a captain in the English naval service. He came to Kent [Litchfield County], Connecticut, not far from 1760, and followed the HAWLEYs [means Ephraim HAWLEY and his family] with whom he had become acquainted, to Arlington [Bennington County, Vermont], about 1768. He [John GRAY] married first a woman of whom we have no certain knowledge, who left one son, John. John GRAY married, second, [Miss?] Mary MORGAN; their children were: (1) Jordan [Jordon?], (2) Mary [born in 1763 in Kent, Litchfield, Connecticut?], (3) Caleb [born in 1765 in Kent?], (4) Dominicus [born in 1770 in Arlington, Bennington, Vermont, and died there 09 January 1821?], (5) David [born in 1776 in Arlington?], (6) Thomas [born in 1779 in Arlington?], and (7) Sarah. Capt. GRAY was a churchman, his politics not known. He [Capt. John GRAY] died 28 November 1806, in his eightieth year. Two of the sons of Dominicus GRAY became ministers of the Protestant Episcopal Church. The Rev. Jordon GRAY was minister of St. Matthew Church, Sandgate [Bennington County, Vermont], and afterward had charge of one or two parishes in the north part of the state. Rev. Nelson GRAY was eight years rector of Christ church, Georgetown, D. C. [The author implies, but does not state, that Jordon GRAY and Nelson GRAY were the two minister sons of Dominicus GRAY.] Submitted by Cathy Kubly
