Bennington GOODELL, Tyler D. Men of Vermont: Illustrated Biographical History of Vermonters & Sons of Vermont. Ullery. Brattleboro: Transcript Publishing Company, 1894, pp 159-160 (portrait p 159) Tyler D. GOODELL, of Readsboro, was born 10 November 1849 in that town [Readsboro, Bennington County, Vermont], son of David and Sabrina (HICKS) GOODELL. The parentage of Mr. GOODELL was of New England stock; he inherited many of the characteristics for which New Englanders of the old school are distinguished. His early life was spent in acquiring an education and upon the farm, and for ten years from his twenty-fifth birthday he was a stage driver from Readsboro. About 1874 he purchased the Goodell House of Readsboro, and since that time has successfully conducted that well-known establishment, making it a model country hotel and presiding over his guests with a grace equaled only by the boniface of old. Always affiliating with the dominant party, he has received many honors at their hands; besides holding many local positions, has three times represented this town in the Legislature, in the sessions of 1880, 1886 and 1892. Although not rabid on the subject of temperance, Mr. GOODELL believes in the upholding and honoring of the prohibitory laws of the state, and has fully demonstrated that Vermont hotels can be successfully conducted without selling liquor. On 25 June 1871 Mr. [Tyler D.] GOODELL married, first, Flora E., daughter of Rev. Jeremiah GIFFORD; she [Flora E. GOODELL] died 26 December 1874; the fruits of this marriage were Hallie T. and Flora E. On 12 February 1879 he [Tyler D. GOODELL] married, second, Ida M., daughter of E. W. and G. M. ROBERTSON of Readsboro; of this union were four sons, two of whom are living: Earl W. and Harvey E. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
