Bennington FILLMORE, Nathaniel Vermont Historical Magazine, No XI, October 1867, p 166 The father of President [Millard] FILLMORE, Nathaniel FILLMORE, was born 19 April 1771 in Bennington [Bennington County, Vermont]; married here and emigrated to Western New York about 1798, and is still living in Aurora, Erie County [New York]. Nathaniel FILLMORE, the grandfather of the President, an early and reputable inhabitant of this town [Bennington], was Ensign in Captain DEWEY's company in the battle of Bennington. One of his sons and many of his descendants are still living in town. [Millard FILLMORE, the second of nine children and the first of five sons, was born 07 January 1800 in Locke Township, Cayuga County, New York, to Nathaniel and Phoebe (MILLARD) FILLMORE. Nathaniel was married a second time, to Eunice LOVE, the stepmother of Millard FILLMORE. Some biographies of President FILLMORE relate that he grew up a family that was "miserably poor." Nathaniel FILLMORE obtained for his son Millard a clerkship in the office of Judge Walter WOOD in Montville, Cayuga County, New York, where the future President began the study of law.] Submitted by Cathy Kubly
