After leaving the farm he taught school for three years in Vermont and five years in Massachusetts; clerk of committees , city of Everett, seven years. Three years' service in Massachusetts volunteer militia, orator of the company three years. Republican. Member of the city committee of Everett twelve years. Member of the Seventh congressional committee of Massachusetts five years. Served three years as secretary and three years as chairman of the ward committee of Everett. Universalist. Member of the Masonic fraternity, Eastern Star, Royal Arcanum, and Everett Board of Trade.
