Bennington BULLOCK, Elmer J. Men of Vermont: Illustrated Biographical History of Vermonters & Sons of Vermont. Ullery. Brattleboro: Transcript Publishing Company, 1894, pp 49-50 (portrait p 50) Elmer J. BULLOCK, of Readsboro [Bennington County, Vermont], was born 21 July 1849 in Whitingham [County, Vermont]. He was educated in the commons schools of Readsboro. After leaving school he served as clerk in several stores in Vermont and Massachusetts. In 1870 he entered into partnership with his father in a general store in Readsboro. In 1882 he sold out and engaged in the real estate and insurance business in North Adams [Berkshire County], Massachusetts. In 1885 he returned to Readsboro, and in 1886 formed a partnership with his mother, under the name of E. J. Bullock & Company. [Was his return to Readsboro precipitated by the death of his father?] It was through the influence of Mr. BULLOCK that the telephone line from North Adams [Massachusetts] to Jacksonville [Vermont] was built, and he was president of the company until the line was sold to the New England Systems. He had also much to do with the organization of the Readsboro Chair Manufacturing Company, and has been its secretary and treasurer ever since. Mr. BULLOCK worked unceasingly until Readsboro had a good water system and ample protection against fire. In 1891 the firm built the Bullock block at a cost of $10,000, in which they at present do business. Mr. BULLOCK has never cared to enter into political life, though frequently urged to do so.
