Bennington BRUCE, George Asa Men of Vermont: Illustrated Biographical History of Vermonters & Sons of Vermont. Ullery. Brattleboro: Transcript Publishing Company, 1894, p 48 (portrait p 48) George Asa BRUCE, of South Shaftsbury [Bennington County, Vermont], was born 17 June 1857 in Danby [Rutland County, Vermont], son of Charles M. and Phebe (SMITH) BRUCE. He received his early education at the district schools and at the hands of a private tutor, followed by a course at Burr and Burton Seminary, and graduated from Williams College with the class of 1879. Following graduation Mr. BRUCE for a time was a bookkeeper, and in 1881 he located at Sioux City [Woodbury County], Iowa, where he became a member of the firm of Cottrell, Bruce & Company, wholesale and retail dealers in farm implements, when he returned East and connected himself with the Waterbury Clock Company of Waterbury [New Haven County], Connecticut, in the capacity of bookkeeper and cashier, remaining with them until 1887, since which time he has been engaged in he mercantile business as a member of the firm of W. P. Mattison & Son, of South Shaftsbury. On 27 May 1880 at South Shaftsbury [Bennington County, Vermont] Mr. [George Asa] BRUCE was married to May V., daughter of William P. and Sarah C. MATTISON. Of this union is one son, Kenneth Mattison. Mr. [George Asa] BRUCE has affiliated with the Republican party, and by that body has been honored with many positions of trust, being at the present time postmaster and chairman of the Republican town committee. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and also of the Blue Lodge, Tucker No. 48, of North Bennington, and Temple Chapter and Taft Commandery No. 8, of Bennington. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
