BATCHELDER, son of Edmund BATCHELDER, was born in 1811 at Mount Vernon [Hillsborough County], New Hampshire; came to Peru [Bennington County, Vermont] in 1819; began to teach when eighteen years of age. Although a farmer, and not college-learned, he is educated; always occupies some town office; is a Justice of the Peace, and the only lawyer we have, which is at once a credit to the town as well as to him. Preparatory education, Burr and Burton Seminary, and Middlebury College, A. B. 1864. He studied law at Albany Law School [Albany, New York] and with Hon. J. M. TYLER, Wilmington and Brattleboro [both in Windham County, Vermont]. He was admitted to the Vermont Bar in 1866. In 1867 he [James Kendrick BATCHELDER] married Alta PARSONS of Arlington [Bennington County, Vermont]. They have one child: Julia Pauline, wife of Dr. C. M. CAMPBELL of Rochester [Windsor County, Vermont]. Mr. BATCHELDER is a Republican; was states attorney for Bennington County 1874-1884; represented Arlington in the Legislature 1874, 1876, 1884, speaker of the House 1884; presidential elector 1880.
