WI BIO - Bayfield Co - ROBERTS, Russell History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, vol I, p 84 Russell ROBERTS, saloon keeper, Bayfield [Bayfield County, Wisconsin; on Lake Superior], was born 21 August 1838 in Canada West. [Canada East and Canada West established in 1840]. He was reared on a farm, and on leaving home in 1857, he engaged in the same business in Walworth County, Wisconsin. In 1860 he moved to Grand Rapids [Centralia and Grand Rapids, Wisconsin, on opposite banks of the Wisconsin River, merged about 1900; about 1920 renamed Wisconsin Rapids, Wood County, Wisconsin], and began lumbering and working as a pilot on the [Wisconsin] River. In 1861 he [Russell ROBERTS] married Miss VAN VAULKINBURG, of Ohio. They [Russell and ---- (VAN VALKINBURG) ROBERTS] have six children: Julia, Jane, Fred W., Frank, Mary A., William, and Edna. In 1872 Russell ROBERTS moved to the western part of the county [Bayfield] upon a farm, where his family now is. He engaged in his present business in Bayfield in June 1881. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
