Fitzgerald of Simsbury and Humphrey of Barkhamsted
I am looking for the father of Edmund Fitzgerald, clues follow:
The following comes from a history book written about Ashtabula County, Ohio.
--------------------------------
"Edmund Fitzgerald, having been a native of Connecticut, born in the latter
quarter of the eighteenth century. The father of Edmond was a loyal patriot of
America, who helped to fight the battles which freed her from British misrule.
In going to the point of enlistment for this service he took with him his son,
Edmund, to whom was entrusted the driving home of the team. On the return trip
young Edmond, then a lad of half dozen summers, was captured by Indians, and
he was not heard from until seven years had elapsed. The war was over and
peace declared, and the boy was given up by his parents as dead, when a party
of Frenchmen, who were trading with the Indians, saw the boy, discovered his
nationality and bought him, in which way he managed to reach his family again.
His father subsequently emigrated with his family to Ashtabula county, Ohio,
where he died about 1840, aged about eighty-five years. Edmund, ...learned the
trade of making woodenware, and on his arrival in Austinburg [Ohio]
established a factory for the prosecution of this business, which proved a
most profitable industry. Edmund was accompanied on his westward trip to Ohio
by his father-in-law, Ambrose Humphreys, the journey being made in a jumper.
They afterward returned to the East for their families. Mr. Humphreys was a
millwright by trade and erected the first mill in Austinburg, the mill being
the first in the county. Edmond and Amanda (Humphreys) Fitzgerald had seven
children..."

Fought in the Revolutionary War
A Henry FitsGerald mustered into Captain Martin Kurtlands Company of the
Connecticutt Regiment of Foot (foot soldiers) in the service of the United
States under the command of Colonel Jonathan Meigs as a private on May 7, 1777
(signed up for the duration of the war). He apparently survived as he is on
the payroll all the way through 1881.
[The only Fitzgerald found in the 660 pages of this microfilmed document was
Henry Fitzgerald].

Elizabeth and Erastus who married a Mary Moore from Simsbury area and later
Jane Jackson in 1836 in Lowville, NY. David was the grandson to John Hoskins b

David Jr./ Lyman married a Ruth ? and had Lt. Ariel Hoskins who is buried in

killed at Wethersfield prison in 1833. I have a boat load of info to share to
anyone looking or wanting to share info. Thanks.

I'm trying to get any information, particularly verifiable, as to when Truman was born, died, married etc. I believe his wife was Lois Higley and that Truman was born abt 1775 there in Barkhamsted. And that Lois was born abt 1776 in CT as well. This has been our families common belief, but presently I found a book written in 1896 where the author believed that Lois died in childhood, Perhaps it should have said childbirth. But I just don't know. I'd like to know who was Truman's wife and all pertinent information. Thank you.

I was just reading your Barkhamstead records - Martha Driggs married one of my ancestors, John Bromham of New Haven. I saw that you have a "?" by the name. Yes, that is the correct spelling. He was the son of John Bromham and Anne Page of New Haven. They were married 25 Jun 1849.
Martha Driggs was the stepmother to my great-grandmother, Anna Mary. John Bromham was either the natural father of my great-grandmother or her uncle. John Bromham and Martha Driggs Bromham were the parents listed when my great-grandmother was baptized in an Episcopal Church in New Haven in 1853. My great-grandmother may have been born to George Ford and Mary Bromham, sister to John Bromham, but I'm not sure that is a fact. Anna Mary was found in records as both Anna Mary Bromham or Anna Mary Ford.
If you ever hear of any Bromhams in New Haven I would appreciate hearing about them. Also I am looking for the parentage of George W. Ford, who was allegedly born in New Haven.

I'm seeking info on my great grandmothers maiden name. She was married to Frank Bevins, of Riverton, (Hitchcockville). And resided there from at least the 1850's,until there deaths in the end of the century, or early 1900's. They are buried there in Riverton, along with, or close to my grandparents. Adolph N. Goetz & Eliza M. Goetz,(Bevins). In the small cemetery on the east side of the Farmington River. I have reason to believe it might be Spencer or Chapman, from a deed I recently found in my former Fathers things. On parchment dated, Nov. 4th 1768,for some land in Newington,Ct.. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated . As a child I asked her if our relatives came over on the Mayflower, in the presence of my father. She said yes, and that several had served in the revolutionary war. That's when my father responded, "why he was never told", and as a true Victorian lady, she said, "No One Ever Asked". My mother has confirmed this memory as correct, as she was present also. We both also remember she belonged to the D.O.A.. But they said they couldn't confirm this, as I do not know which chapter she belonged to. Thank You Again,...

I am researching the FARGOs of Litchfield County. During the Rev War, Ezekiel FARG0 (b. 1751 New London?) married Temperance (last name unknown, b. abt 1750) probably in the current borders of Litchfield County. They had a child Avis/Aves FARG0 in 1778/9 in Barkhamsted. Avis FARGO married Lot NEWELL 3 Jan 1797 in Barkhamsted. I am looking for any information about Ezekiel FARGO and Temperance, especially parent names. Ezekiel has a Rev War pension, and lived in Sandisfield MA later. I am trying to locate birth record of my grandfather, Charles E. MORRIS, born 12 December 1871. His hand written death record in Biddeford, Me. notes he was born in "Barnstead" or "Barkstead" Ct. I am assuming this could be Barkhamsted. For reasons of his own, he was very secretive about his origins. Based on what we can piece together he ran away from home at the age of ten to follow the horse race circuit. He was living with an older brother at the time but we are not sure it was in Connecticut. His marriage license, Old Orchard Beach Me. 1899, stated his father was Richard Morris born Syracuse, NY and his mother, Margaret Davis born in Troy, NY. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

His father's name was John C. MESSENGER, born about 1796 in Barkhamsted, Ct. Loren was also born in Barkhamsted and died on December 18, 1897 in Suffield,Ct. According to his death record, he died in Granville, MA and is buried there. I went to Granville but no one seemd to know where Granville Cemetery was located. I haven't been able to find any trace of him. Maybe I have been looking in all the wrong places. I know he existed; he was my great, great grandfather. I am trying to find the parentage of a Rufus MESSENGER. The earliest records I have seen of him indicate that he was born between 1770 and 1775 in Connecticut. He bought land near Rochester, NY in 1795 where he was referred to as being young and from Connecticut. Other NY records say he was from Hartford County, CT, but others say he was from Litchfield County, CT. He married Rosannah GODDARD in November 1798 in Granby, CT. After their marriage, they lived in Hartland, CT until 1803. Their oldest child was Rufus Milo MESSENGER, born in 1799 at Hartland, CT. His marriage record doesn't mention any witnesses of the last name MESSENGER.
I have gone through as many records as I can get hold of from Hartford County, CT looking for his parentage, but without any success. I want to go through Litchfield County records, but am not finding many records to look at. I know of three Messenger's there - Abner and Elijah in Barkhamstead and Reuben in Litchfield. All three were Revolutionary War soldiers.
Can anyone advise me where to look for information on these three men and their families, or hook me up with some one who knows something of them? Thanks.

My 4th gr grandparents were Reuben and Hannah Sands Chaugham (Chaugum) Barber. Reuben was born July 16, 1755 in South East, Dutchess Co., NY. He died April 16, 1849 in Catlin, NY. Hannah was born in Barkhamsted in 1754. She died in Catlin, NY in 1858. Reuben was a Revolutionary soldier. In her widow's pension application after his death, Hannah's deposition says she was married to Reuben in Barkhamsted, County of Litchfield, Conn. by Justice of the Peace Thomas Wilder, on Oct. 31, 1784. However, in a separate affidavit when she was applying for bounty land, she states she and Reuben were married in Barkhamsted on or about Oct. 30, 1778 by Thomas Wilder, Justice of the Peace. I would like to determine which date is correct. Are there any records for marriages performed by Thomas Wilder in Barkhamsted? If so, how would I gain access to them?
Second part of my query: their son, James B. Barber was born in 1791 in CT. I am assuming he was born in Barkhamsted because Reubin and Hannah sold their land on Ragged Mountain in Barkhamsted to George Shepherd on October 18, 1793. Hannah had inheirited the land after her father's (James Chaugham) death. However, in his pension application in 1832, which was made in Tioga Co., NY, Reuben states that after the war he lived in Ridgebury, CT and then moved to New Hartford, CT and lived there until about 1796. After that he went to Greenfield, Saratoga Co., NY until about 1800 and then to Old Shesheguin, Luzerne Co., PA for about one year; then to Sugar Creek, Lycoming Co., PA until about 1810. Then he moved to Catherine (now Catlin) in Tioga Co., NY and lived there until his death. So, I would like to determine where James B. Barber was born in 1791 -- Barkhamsted, Ridgebury, or New Hartford, CT. ? If anyone has this info or knows how I can find it, please contact me. Thanks.

I'm a freelance writer & have taken on a unique project. Yrs ago I purchased the indenture papers of a 6 year old child named SUSAN RICE. Apparently from Barkhamsted, CT, she was born in 1835, & had been bought, literally, in 1842 by a man named HARVEY [Lester] MOORE. His father was RIDEOUT MOORE, who owned an inn/tavern in Hartland. Harvey's wife was MARIA TRUNKEY. When I purchased the papers I knew only the child's name & began searching for more info. The rest of the story is rather unsettling. In 1843, Susan was murdered by Maria, beat to death w/the branch of a thornbush. Maria was tried, convicted, & sent to Wethersfield State Prison for an indeterminate amount of time. I believe, though am not sure yet, that upon her release she returned to live w/Harvey, considered mentally ill, & died in CT &/or over the border in MA (where I think Harvey was buried). Ever since I learned of this--thru extensive research & visits to CT area numerous times--I've tried to find Susan's original family & discover more about Harvey Moore & Maria. I've had contact w/a number of Trunkey descendants & proven that the Trunkey family now in the western states, including WA, is the same family line to which Maria belonged. Yet, though most have Maria's name in their genealogy & know of her existence, they know nothing of what happened to her, what she did to Susan. I've made connections w/a few Moore descendants, but have yet to be able to give Susan a family. It's my guess that she may have been the daughter of AARON POST RICE. I've a # of documents that have led me to this assumption. . .but yet, no proof. If anyone has heard of this story, or has any info on Maria or Harvey or Susan, I'd appreciate hearing back from you.
Thanks.

Also, her suspected father, the James SEARLES listed in the 1820 census for Barkhamsted and the 1840 census for Granville (also 1830 in Hartland, 1850-60 in Granby, CT). I suspect, but am not sure, that he is a Rhode Island SEARLES, as opposed to a Hartland or Northampton SEARLES.
