Addison RUSSELL, George Samuel Genealogical and Family History of the State of Vermont: A Record of the Achievements of Her People in the Making of a Commonwealth and the Founding of a Nation. Carleton, ed. Chicago: Lewis, 1903, pp 407-409 George Samuel RUSSELL, who for many years was identified with the agricultural interests of Addison County [Vermont] and now makes his home in Middlebury [Addison County], Vermont, was born 21 February 1846 in Shelburne [Chittenden County], Vermont, a son of Harry RUSSELL, who was born in September 1812 in that place [Shelburne, Vermont]. The paternal grandfather, Thomas RUSSELL, was born in Hinesburg, [Chittenden County, Vermont], and his father, Charles RUSSELL, came to Vermont from Connecticut, being one of the first settlers of Hinesburg. In compensation for the service which he [Charles RUSSELL] rendered in surveying the town [Hinesburg], he was given a tract and land, and finally became the owner of six hundred acres. Thomas RUSSELL also followed the tilling of the soil as a life occupation, and in Shelburne, Vermont, he owned one hundred acres, which he continued to cultivate until he [Thomas RUSSELL] died in 1816. His wife bore the maiden name of Azuba ROGERS, and was a native of Connecticut; she bore her husband [Charles RUSSELL] four children; and she [Azuba (ROGERS) RUSSELL] died in Malone [Franklin County], New York, at the age of eighty years, passing away in the faith of the Methodist Episcopal church, of which she was long a faithful member. Harry RUSSELL spent his entire life in the place of his nativity [Shelburne, Vermont], where he was engaged in agricultural pursuits; he [Harry RUSSELL] died at the age of eighty-three years, occasioned by his being thrown from a wagon. He held many of the town offices and was a man of much influence in his community. He [Harry RUSSELL] married Maroa REED, who left two children at her death: (1) Joshua C., the elder, born in 1836, who died in 1878 in Shelburne [Chittenden County, Vermont]; and (2) Imogene Maroa, who married Egbert B. WILMOT, and died [submitter assumes she died as "Imogene Maroa WILMOT"] in May 1898 in Orange [Essex County], New Jersey. For his second wife, Mr. [Harry] RUSSELL chose Sarah MINER, a native of Shelburne [Chittenden County], Vermont, where her father, Samuel MINER, was numbered among the early settlers, the latter's [Samuel MINER's] father, Roswell MINER, having come to Vermont from Connecticut in 1794. The MINER family was planted in America by Thomas MINER, who came from England in 1630 with Governor John WINTHROP. Landing at Salem [Essex County, Massachusetts], he [Thomas MINER] settled in Charlestown [Suffolk County], Massachusetts, removing later to Stonington [New London County], Connecticut, where he [Thomas MINER] died in 1690 at the age of eighty-three years. Roswell MINER, who settled in Shelburne, was his grandson. The line has been traced to Sir Henry MINER, of Mindippi Hills, Somersetshire, England, who died there in 1359. Mr. and Mrs. Samuel MINER became the parents of a number of children, but only one is now living, Mrs. Ira RUSSELL, of Burlington [Chittenden County], Vermont. Samuel MINER's widow drew a pension for his services in the war of 1812. Of the five children born to Mr. and Mrs. Harry RUSSELL, four are now living: (1) George S., of this review; (2) Henry W., of Hinesburg [Chittenden County, Vermont]; (3) Noble M., a resident of Red Rock [Lassen County], California; and (4) Edmund A., on the old home farm in Shelburne [Chittenden County, Vermont]. The mother [Sarah (MINER) RUSSELL] died in January 1869 at the age of fifty-two years. George S. RUSSELL was reared and received his elementary education in the schools of Shelburne, afterward pursuing his studies at Essex Center, and subsequently entered Shelburne Academy. At the age of twenty-three years he located on the farm which he still owns, in the town of New Haven [Addison County, Vermont], which consists of two hundred and eighty acres of fertile land, and he also owns a tract of one hundred and forty-seven acres. Until 1901 he engaged in general farming and raising stock, and is recognized as one of the leading agriculturalists of this part of the county. At the present time he makes his home in Middlebury [Addison County] a part of the time, but retains a place of abode on the farm, which is located on the main road from Vergennes to Middlebury, six miles from Middlebury. In 1869 Mr. [George S.] RUSSELL married [Miss] Amanda C. CARTER, who was born in Monkton [Addison County, Vermont], in which place her father, Harry W. CARTER, was also born. He was the son of Solomon CARTER [Jr.], who was born in October 1785 in Connecticut. The last named [Solomon CARTER, Jr.] was a son of Solomon CARTER [Sr.], with whom he came from Connecticut to Vermont before 1800. Solomon CARTER, Jr., died 10 July 1868 at the age of eighty-two years. His [Solomon CARTER, Jr.'s] wife, who bore the maiden name of [Miss] Laura PECK, was born in New Haven [Addison County], Vermont, and was a daughter of William PECK [see the Vermont biography of Warren PECK]. Mr. and Mrs. Solomon CARTER [Solomon and Laura (PECK) CARTER] became the parents of six children, four of whom grew to maturity, but all are now [1903] deceased, and the mother's [Laura (PECK) CARTER's] death occurred at the age of forty years. Harry W. CARTER, the father of Mrs. RUSSELL [Amanda C.], was reared on a farm in New Haven [Vermont], and after reaching his twenty-first year, returned to Monkton, where he continued to reside for the succeeding twenty-five years. His last days were spent in his home in New Haven [Addison County, Vermont], where he [Harry W. CARTER] died at the age of seventy-five years. He [Harry W. CARTER] was married to [Miss] Eliza BEERS, a native of Ferrisburg [Addison County, Vermont], where her [Eliza's] father, Elnathan BEERS, was a prominent farmer, he [Elnathan] having come to Vermont from Connecticut. He [Elnathan BEERS] died at the age of eighty-seven years. Her [Eliza's] mother, whose maiden name was Sally CAPRON, was a native of Rhode Island, and she [Sally CAPRON, wife of Elnathan BEERS] became the mother of five children, but of this number Mrs. Caroline COLLINS is the only survivor, and she [Caroline] resides in Monkton, having reached the age of ninety-six years. Her mother [Sally (CAPRON) BEERS, the wife or widow of Elnathan] died at the age of eighty-seven years. Mr. and Mrs. CARTER [Harry W. and Eliza (BEERS) CARTER] had one child, Mrs. [George S.] RUSSELL [Amanda C. (CARTER) RUSSELL], and the mother [Eliza (BEERS) CARTER] died 08 March 1888, at the age of sixty-eight years. The union of Mr. and Mrs. RUSSELL [George S. and Amanda C. (CARTER) RUSSELL] has been blessed with one son, Leroy C., who was born 23 May 1874. He is a graduate of the Middlebury College, taught school three years in New York towns, pursued the study of law in Burlington [Chittenden County, Vermont], and is now engaged in practice at Middlebury [Addison County, Vermont]. He [Leroy C. RUSSELL] married [Miss?] May ROCKWELL, of Ashtabula [Ashtabula County], Ohio, and they [Leroy C. and May RUSSELL] have one child, George L. Mr. George S. RUSSELL gives his political support to the Republican party, and has served as chairman of the board of selectmen, as justice of the peace, and in 1894 was called upon to represent his town in the legislature. He [George S. RUSSELL] is a member of the Congregational church, of which his wife [Amanda C.] and son [George L.] are also members. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
