Addison JAMES, Edwin Vermont Historical Magazine, No. XI, October 1867, p 113 (extracted from a section on the history of Weybridge, Addison County, Vermont; author credits his source as the Middlebury Triennial Catalogue) Dr. Edwin JAMES was born 29 August 1797 in Weybridge [Addison County, Vermont]; graduated at Middlebury College in 1816; studied medicine in Albany [Albany County], New York, three years; botany with Prof. TORREY; geology with Prof. EATON; was attached to Major LONG's exploring expedition to the Rocky Mountains three years; two years compiling and publishing the journal of said expedition; six years surgeon and Indian agent at the extreme outpost of the U. S. Government; two years editor of the "Temperance Herald and Journal," Albany, New York. From 1834 to 1840 returned to the Indian agency, since which he has been a farmer in Burlington [Des Moines County], Iowa, acting as an Indian agent and surveyor. He has published nine different works, five of them in the Ojibewa language, among which is a translation of the whole Bible. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
