Burlington: Ullery Publishing Company, 1912, p 212-213 John Andrew HARRINGTON, hardware merchant, Vergennes [Addison County, Vermont], was born 05 October 1861 at Weybridge [Addison County, Vermont], son of George L. and Emma E. (WASHBURNE) HARRINGTON. Educated in the public schools. Was clerk for Farnsworth & Company, hardware dealers, Middlebury [Addison County], 1882-1883. In 1883 entered the employ of C. A. Booth & Son, hardware dealers, Vergennes [Addison County]. In 1892 he purchased a third interest in the business, the firm name becoming C. A. Booth, Son, & Company, purchased part interest in the share of C. A. Booth at his death in 1897, and in 1908 bought out the entire business, which he now conducts under the name of J. A. Harrington & Company. Republican; was city treasurer from 1898-1911, thirteen years, when he declined a re-appointment; chairman of the board of license commissioners the past three years; has been delegate to different Republican conventions; alderman in the city of Vergennes; was secretary of the Vergennes Board of Trade; one of the trustees of the Bixby Memorial Free Library. Is a member of St. Paul's Protestant Episcopal Church; a member of the vestry for several years. Past master of Dorchester Lodge No. 1, the oldest Masonic lodge in the state, chartered in 1791; past high priest of Jerusalem Chapter No. 2, Royal Arch Masons, the oldest chapter of R. A. M. is the state; and past thrice illustrious master of Vergennes Council No. 2, Royal & Select Masons, which is also the oldest chapter of R. & S. M. in Vermont; is a member of Calvary Commandery No. 1, Knights Templar; Mt. Sinai Temple, Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of Mystic Shrine; and a 32-degree Scottish Rite Mason. In 1892 he [John Andrew HARRINGTON] married [Miss?] Anna M. BOTSFORD of Vergennes; she died there Vergennes [Addison County, Vermont] in 1912; they had two children: Ruth Botsford, and Robert Earl.
