Addison FOOTE, Alvin Vermont Historical Magazine, No XI, October 1867, p 601 (extracted from a section on the history of Burlington, Chittenden County) Hon. Alvin FOOTE, the son of Daniel FOOTE, of Middlebury [Addison County, Vermont], a soldier of the Revolution, was born in 1776 in the camp at Castleton [Rutland County, Vermont], where Mrs. FOOTE had accompanied her husband. Mrs. FOOTE's maiden name was Anna WOODWARD, her native place, Hanover [Grafton County], New Hampshire. He husband [Daniel FOOTE] being detained a prisoner at Ticonderoga, when the subject of our notice [Alvin FOOTE] was but an infant a few weeks old, she [Anna FOOTE], although a delicate woman, walked, with her babe in her arms, from Castleton to Hanover. After the war the father [Daniel FOOTE] removed to New York, and died in Canton [St. Lawrence County, New York]. Alvin FOOTE graduated at Dartmouth, studied law in the office of Judge PAINE of Vermont, and commenced practice in Burlington [Chittenden County, Vermont], about 1804, where he built up an honorable reputation as a lawyer and a citizen. Mr. FOOTE's practice of law in Burlington was about twenty or twenty-five years. He was twice married, first with Priscilla, daughter of Col. Nathan RICE, in 1815, by whom he had four children, and who died [Priscilla FOOTE died] in 1841. On 18 January 1845 he [Alvin FOOTE] married [his second wife] Mrs. Caroline CLARK, the widow of Rev. Samuel CLARK, who still survives him [meaning Caroline FOOTE still survives Alvin FOOTE]. Judge [Alvin] FOOTE was deceased 21 September 1856. ["Was deceased" is unusual wording for this text, and may suggest uncertainty as to the exact date of death. Submitter is not researching this family, and thus did not seek record of death to determine cause or circumstances surrounding it.] [In a section on the history of Guildhall, Essex County, Vermont, (in Vermont Historical Magazine, No XI, October 1867, page 1007) is the following: "Elijah FOOTE, who first appears on the count court docket as a lawyer of Guildhall [Essex County, Vermont], seems to have been a very respectable attorney and esteemed citizen, and for five years represented the town" of Guildhall in the Vermont Legislature. Was Elijah related to Daniel?] Submitted by Cathy Kubly
