Addison COOPER, Stephen Vermont Historical Magazine, No XI, October 1867, p 101 (excerpt from a section on the history of Shoreham, Addison County) Deacon COOPER [Stephen COOPER] was born 22 June 1746 in East Hampton, Long Island [Suffolk County, New York]; came to Shoreham [Addison County, Vermont] with his family, the autumn of 1789, and is especially deserving an honorable mention, as being the individual who first introduced into this town the ordinances of religion, and to whose indefatigable labors the people were indebted, as though he had been pastor, for his visits to the sick, and attendance of their funerals, during the thirteen years that he led the Congregational Church as first deacon, and moderator. Living an exemplary life, he entered into rest on 29 January 1827. Deacon COOPER found worthy co-laborers in Deacon Eli SMITH, of the Baptist, and Deacon HAND, of his own society. Faithfully they served their day and generation, and are held in grateful remembrance. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
