CHAPMAN, business man, Middlebury, was born 06 January 1845 at Middlebury [Addison County, Vermont], son of George C. and Adelia (FLETCHER) CHAPMAN. He took a partial course at Middlebury College, and graduated from Hobart College, Geneva [Ontario County], New York, in the class of 1866. Mr. CHAPMAN has been an extensive lumber and real estate dealer, and was formerly in the general mercantile business in Middlebury. Republican; aide-de-camp, with rank of colonel, on Gov. Redfield Proctor's staff. Sheriff of Addison County 1898-1904; member of the Republican state committee for twenty years, and its chairman four years; a delegate to the national convention at Chicago in 1908. Episcopalian. Past master, Union Lodge No. 2, Free & Accepted Masons; charter member of Moroco Temple, Mystic Shrine, Jacksonville [Windham County]; was grand commander of Knights Templar in 1888; member of Knights of Pythias, and Chi Psi Fraternity. In 1875 Mr. CHAPMAN married Jessie HAMMOND of Orwell [Addison County, Vermont]. They have two daughters: Jessie C., Mrs. D. C.
