Allan CALHOUN, merchant, Middlebury [Addison County, Vermont], was born 12 October 1850 in Paisley, Scotland, son of Allan and Jane (WYLIE) CALHOUN. Educated in the public schools of Newark [Cumberland County], New Jersey. Engaged in the plumbing and heating business in Troy [Rensselaer County], New York; later in the employ of G. S. BLODGETT, Burlington [Chittenden County, Vermont]; has been in the plumbing and heating business in Middlebury since 1882; among the largest contracts he has filled are the state house and post office in Montpelier; government buildings and Fort Ethan Allen; Middlebury College and high school in Middlebury; and contracts in Pittsford [Rutland County] and Morrisville [Lamoille County]. Republican; represented Middlebury in the Legislature 1908; served on general committee and public health committee; trustee of Middlebury several times; water commissioner five years; member of prudential committee school district No. 4, Middlebury, six years; chief of Middlebury fire department several years. Educated at Middlebury High School [Addison County] and Albany Business College. Was in the plumbing and heating business in Vergennes 1897-1900; junior member of the firm of A. Calhoun & Son, hardware, plumbing, and heating, since 1900. Democrat; member of Democratic state committee 1902-1910; trustee Middlebury village 1910. Member Union Lodge No. 2, Free & Accepted Masons, Middlebury; past noble grand Lake Dunmore Lodge No. 11, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, member of Grand Lodge of Vermont, and has been district deputy grand master of district No. 3; past chief patriarch of Addison Encampment No. 27, I.
