Addison - BASCOM, Elisha Vermont Historical Magazine, No XI, October 1867, pp 101-102 Elisha BASCOM was born in 1776 in Newport [Sullivan County], New Hampshire. He came with his father, Elias BASCOM, to Orwell [Addison County, Vermont], and from thence to Shoreham [Addison County], in 1802, and settled on the farm now owned by his son, Ira BASCOM.* In person, Judge BASCOM was of a large but not corpulent frame, erect and tall. His countenance, a true index to his mind, wore an expression of benignity, self-possession, and sound judgment. These reliable qualities won him favor with his fellow citizens. He was representative of the town nine times; judge of the county court two years, and frequently administrator to the estate of the deceased. The Judge [Elisha BASCOM] was first married to Charlotte HOWLEY, 30 December 1802, and second, to Laura BUSH, 28 October 1806. He was a member and supporter of the Unitarian society. A man with limited means, still liberal, who was not known to have an enemy, and died in this town [Shoreham, Addison County, Vermont], 01 August 1850, aged seventy-four. [* In the History of Orwell is a Dr. Ira BASCOM, born in Orwell, who practiced in Granville [Washington County], New York; located in Orwell in 1819; and died in 1820. Is this Ira the same Ira BASCOM mentioned in the biography?
