Dodge. Burlington: Ullery Publishing Company, 1912, p 93 Charles E. ABELL, farmer of Orwell, was born in Orwell [Addison County, Vermont], 02 May 1836, a son of Mason S. and Mary H. (DICKINSON) ABELL. He was educated in the public schools of Orwell, at the Troy Conference Academy, and the Middleburry College, class of 1861. Charles E. ABELL enlisted as a Private in Company H, 5th Vermont Volunteers, 04 September 1861, and was discharged for disability 20 January 1862. He re-enlisted as Captain in Company D, 14th Vermont Volunteers, 29 August 1862, and served in that capacity until he was mustered out of service 30 July 1863. His principal engagement was at Gettysburg. In the fall of 1865 Mr. [Charles E.] ABELL occupied the farm at "Abell's Corners," which was cleared by his ancestors who came to Orwell in 1784, and where he has since been engaged in farming. In 1867 Charles E. ABELL married Mary Jane ROOT [a maiden name?] of Orwell. A Republican, Charles E. ABELL has held most of the elective offices in the gift of the town. He represented Orwell in the Legislature in 1876, and was senator from Addison County in 1892. Mr. ABELL is a Congregationalist. He is a member of Independent Lodge No. 10, Free & Accepted Masons, of Orwell; Farmer's Chapter No. 9, Royal Arch Masons, of Brandon; and Mt. Calvary Commandery No. 1, Knights Templar, of Middlebury.
