Chicago: Ogle, 1901, pp 603-604 Hubbard Schoff WILLARD, an extensive landowner and general farmer, and an influential citizen, residing in Springville Township, Adams County, Wisconsin, was born 01 April 1846 in St. Lawrence County, New York, the son of Leander and Lucy Ann (SCHOFF) WILLARD. The father of our subject [Leander WILLARD] was born in 1814 in Vermont, of Holland descent. While he [Hubbard Schoff WILLARD] was yet a boy his father [Leander WILLARD] died, and as he [Hubbard Schoff WILLARD] was the eldest of his [p 604] mother's family, a large share of the care of the family devolved upon him. He came to Wisconsin in 1864, locating in Springville Township, Adams County, where he has since resided. The mother of our subject [Lucy Ann (SCHOFF) WILLARD] was born in St. Lawrence County, New York, of Holland descent, and died at the age of fifty-one years. They [Leander and Lucy Ann (SCHOFF) WILLARD] were the parents of nine children: (1) Alfred, who enlisted during the Civil War and died in the service; (2) Hubbard S., our subject; (3) Emma M., now Mrs. Milo HARRIS, of Oxford [Marquette County], Wisconsin; (4) Ann Sophia, now Mrs. Robert MONTEITH, of Springville Township [Adams County, Wisconsin]; (5) Jeremiah A., residing in Kilbourn [now Wisconsin Dells, Columbia County, Wisconsin]; (6) John S., in Springville Township [Adams County, Wisconsin]; and (7) Jennie A., now Mrs. C. PALMER, of Hancock, Waushara County, Wisconsin. Two died in infancy. [Numbering added by submitter; not indicative of order of birth.] Hubbard Schoff WILLARD, when 18 years of age, came to Wisconsin with his parents, and at the age of twenty engaged in farming at White Creek, Adams County. He has resided on his present farm in Springville Township [Adams County] since 1871, and has erected substantial buildings and made many improvements, which render the place desirable for residence, as well as facilitating the work incident to farm life. His land comprises 320 acres, and aside from general farming he has for some years past raised Percheron Norman horses, and has some fine specimens. He has operated a steam threshing machine since 1878, and formerly ran the same by horse power. He owns tracts of land in Springville and adjacent townships, and has more or less for some years past bought and sold real estate in different localities in Adams County. On 25 August 1866 Mr. [Hubbard Schoff] WILLARD was married to [Miss] Margaret Emmeline HARRIS, daughter of Ananias and Phoebe (BREWER) HARRIS. Mrs. WILLARD [then Margaret Emmeline HARRIS] was born in Springfield, Erie County, Pennsylvania. Hubbard Schoff and Margaret Emmeline (HARRIS) WILLARD was born (1) one child, who died in infancy; and they also reared two adopted children: (2) Henry Wines, now in Easton, Adams County [Wisconsin]; and (3) Ethel Wines, now Mrs. LUDKIE, of New Lisbon [Juneau County], Wisconsin. ["Wines" may or may not be a surname. Submitter did not view primary or other records to provide support for events or other information given in this biography.] Mr. [Hubard Schoff] WILLARD is a member of Quincy Lodge, No. 71, Ancient Free & Accepted Masons, at Friendship [Adams County], and also the White Creek Camp, Modern Woodmen of America. He was elected Sheriff of Adams County in 1880, and served two years in that capacity. For a number of years he was Chairman of the township board in Springville Township [Adams County], and Chairman of the county committee for some years past. He is a member of the jury commission for Adams County, and in all of the offices which he has filled, he has discharged his duties faithfully and well, and gained the confidence of the people. In political faith he is a Republican, and has stood stanchly for the principles of his party throughout his career. He is respected wherever he is known and has gained a competence by the exercise of industry, prudence, and honest dealings, and merits his hard-earned success. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
