WI BIO - Adams Co - REED, Calvin E. Commemorative and Biographical Record of Columbia, Sauk and Adams Counties, Wisconsin. Chicago: Ogle, 1901, pp 244-245 Calvin E. REED, among those who gave the best years of their lives to the development of the resources of Adams County [Wisconsin], was born 15 December 1815 in Berkshire [Berkshire County], Massachusetts, and reared to maturity in Livingston County, New York, whither he had accompanied his parents when a child. He determined early in his career to seek his fortune in the New West, and in 1845 he left his New York home and came to Wisconsin; he located in Rock County, where he purchased land of the government, improved it, and held it for ten years, then in 1856 moved to White Creek, Adams County, Wisconsin, [p 245] and purchased a farm of about 120 acres on the site of the present village. He erected a good house, which now stands within the village limits, also good barns and other farm buildings. The residence is now occupied by his daughter, Mrs. William FISHER. Mr. [Calvin E.] REED was a man of great force of character, business ability, strictest integrity, and a Christian of devout principles. By good example and liberal education he did much to maintain Christian institutions and works in the community. He was a member of the Baptist Church, but his Christianity was broad and generous. In politics he was not a strong partisan, but took great interest in the affairs of good government, local and national, and always supported men and measures he believed were for the good of the people. Calvin E. REED served for eighteen years as Postmaster, and his duty was conscientiously performed during the whole of that period. His death was seriously felt by the entire community as an irreparable loss, and the heartfelt sympathies of all were extended to the bereaved family, each member of the community feeling it as a personal loss. He was the counselor and friend of all in distress, a genial neighbor, a kind and indulgent parent and devoted husband. He [Calvin E. REED] died 09 May 1895 at White Creek [Adams County, Wisconsin]. On 30 December 1837 [Miss] Sarah TWIST, daughter of Thomas and Mary (BURKHART) TWIST, became the wife of Calvin E. REED. Mrs. REED [Sarah nee TWIST] was born 23 July 1819 in Mt. Morris, Livingston County, New York. [In the 1860 Census of White Creek, Adams County, Wisconsin, Sarah G. (TWIST) REED is 41 years of age, and lives with her husband, Calvin E., age forty-five, and She was a devoted wife and mother, and like her husband a devout member of the Baptist Church. Her death occurred [Mrs. Sarah (TWIST) REED, widow of Calvin E. REED, died] 28 January 1899 in the village of White Creek [Adams County, Wisconsin], and was deeply mourned by all who had known her. During the latter years of her life her health failed, and she was unable to attend to her household duties. She devoted much time to reading, and was a close student of the Bible and of all good literature. She retained her faculties perfectly until her last illness, which began in July 1898, but from that time until her death she was a great sufferer, and required the constant care of her daughters, who attended her. Mr. and Mrs. REED [Calvin E. and Sarah (TWIST) REED] were the parents of the following children: (1) A. Josephine [Avis Josephine REED], now Mrs. William FISHER [married 14 September 1861; Dr. William FISHER born 18 September 1833 in New York; see also the Adams County, Wisconsin, biography of William FISHER]; (2) Ennis T., for whom Ennis T. AUSTIN, who was born 03 March 1840 in Pennsylvania, and who is listed as a member of the C. E. REED household in the 1870 Census of White Creek, Adams County]; (4) Sarah W. [born in Wisconsin and aged nine years in the 1860 Census of White Creek], now [text published 1901] Mrs. BERGMAN; and (5) Kittie [born in Wisconsin and one year of age in the 1860 Census of White Creek], who died 25 December 1864, aged six years.
